Have you ever felt the need to step back, catch your breath, and realign? I did just that the first 3 weeks of November when I took a social media break.

During this time, I took a deliberate step back from social media and only used WhatsApp minimally. I took this break not because I had to, but because I chose to.

This break was a time for reflection, reconnection with others and self, and rest…and I’d love to share how it went.

It felt very nice not having to post or keep checking for updates during this social media break. So much so that I considered not going back to LinkedIn, which is where I do most of my online business networking.

Interestingly, I found that I was more effective and created more meaningful connections during this social media break.

Here are achievements I got in that time…

1. Hosted the Nawiri Meetup

Warũgũrũ Mũchĩra, Jane Mubari and I kicked off what I aim to grow into an empowering community of women at this meetup. Physically meeting people I’d connected with online for years was an incredible experience.

The meetup was also a reminder of the power of community and why creating spaces for connection and growth matters so much to me.

2. Met with clients and connections in Nairobi

There’s something magical about face-to-face conversations that virtual meetings can’t replicate. These physical meetings reminded me of the importance of nurturing relationships and being present, and I plan to have more physical coaching sessions and catch ups next year.

3. Went on a “Mumcation”

Every year, my mum, sisters, and I take time to reconnect on a holiday that’s just for us, though our children keep trying to sneak their way in.

The Mumcation is one of the highlights of my year, and this time was no different. I love that we get time away from our families to relax and update each other.

4. Spent time with my extended family

My extended family meets during our annual Christmas family meetup which is coming up in a few weeks. Meeting most of them during my break in November is a bonus. Being able to hang out instead of just talking on phone or virtually is a reminder of what truly matters in life: love, connection, and the bonds that make us who we are.

Adding an unexpected week

My initial plan was to take a 2-week break. However, despite the joy and fulfillment of the these achievements, I returned home feeling drained.

As an introvert, I knew I needed to recharge before diving back into work. So, I gave myself permission to slow down for a week before jumping back fully into work mode.

During this extra self-care week, I focused on:

  1. Relaxing and reconnecting with myself.
  2. Spending time with my children.
  3. Keeping work minimal by focusing only on coaching my clients and mentoring participants in the Women in Digital Business (WIDB) program.

Taking a social media break should be a priority

This 3-week social media break reminded me that prioritizing yourself isn’t just OK, it’s necessary. Taking a step back allows you to show up stronger after the break, with clarity and renewed energy.

Social media, for all its benefits, can keep us busy and give the illusion of connection. But true connection often lies beyond the screen. It’s OK to unplug deliberately – not just when you need to – and reconnect with what truly matters to you.

I’m still enjoying the results of that break and have slowed down considerably in my social media interactions. That is something I want to carry forward into the new year so that I can spend more time creating meaningful interactions away from social media.

What about you?

Have you ever taken a social media break? What did you learn from it?

I’d love to hear from you so share your experience in the Comments.
