“A dream is just a spectacular plan waiting to be executed.”

This is one of two quotes that I read recently.

The second quote is, “Life can do a number on even the happiest of souls”.

These two quotes truly capture how life has been for me since January 2020.

I started 2020 with what I thought was my best 10-year plan, a plan that I had carefully crafted over two months. But life had other ideas and did a number on me and my plan!

Just 16 days into the year, I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. My blood sugar levels were so high I spent hours in the emergency room as doctors worked on bringing down the levels.

It turned out that what I thought was a routine checkup for recurring boils would instead require a complete mindset, nutrition, and lifestyle overhaul. I immediately had to put my plans on the back burner to focus on improving my health and wellness.

And as we all know, barely two months later, COVID-19 took over, with diabetes classified as a high-risk condition.

Life had taken my well-thought out 10-year plan and thrown it out of the window!

Fast-forward to 2024

While the pandemic may be over, the shake-ups continue.

This year began with heartbreak after losing my brother who passed away on 29th December 2023, and was buried on 4th January 2024.

The year started with mourning and moved into a period of social unrest in Kenya during the Gen Z maandamano (protests).

I couldn’t help but worry during these protests, not just for my business but also for the Gen Zs in my life, including my own children and their friends, other relatives, and children of people I know. This time, I had enough coping strategies that helped me stay on track despite the fear and business upheavals.

Then…before the dust settled, we are now in political turmoil after the impeachment of our Vice President. The country has been polarized by events leading to this impeachment, which is also affecting life and business kea ground (on the ground).

These challenges (personal, professional, political, and economic) have taught me the importance of having flexible goals, adaptable strategies, and an unwavering commitment to growth.

Why the Nawiri Meetup?

Such challenges that result from life hitting you sideways when you least expect it can disrupt your goals and stop you on your tracks.

That is one of the facts that inspired me to host the Nawiri Half-Day Meetup on November 2nd, 2024.

Nawiri is a Swahili word meaning to prosper or thrive. The Meetup is designed for women who, like me, are navigating life’s unexpected twists and turns but still want to achieve their dreams.

At the meetup, I’ll share my own agile approach to planning, one that allows for pivots, recalibrations, and resilience.

This strategy is central to my coaching, as it equips my clients with tools to evaluate and adjust their plans, whether monthly, quarterly, or yearly. It’s all about staying adaptable to what’s happening kwa ground (“On the ground”).
